Every year the Prince George branch of the B.C. Schizophrenia Society holds a holiday dinner and dance for members of the Activity Centre for Empowerment (ACE).

For many members of ACE, this is the only celebration they will get during the holidays.

The society reached out to local businesses and community members for donations to make the event happen.

The request really struck a chord with one local business owner when she got the letter asking for donations from the society.

Darlene Thorne, whose mother struggled for years as an undiagnosed schizophrenic, took up the Campaign for Giving.

Thorne, who owns the Nail Cellar, enlisted the help of family and friends and in 10 days managed to gather $2,000 in cash donations, $740 in gift cards and over $1,000 worth of gifts and non-perishable food items.

"These gifts along with all the other donations and gifts we have received from the generous people of Prince George, will make this season's celebration for the special people of ACE a 'miracle to remember,'" said Dr. Barbara Kane, honourary director of the local branch of the BC Schizophrenia Society.
