Robert and Gladys Michell, owner-operators of Selkin Logging Ltd. & Michell Enterprise Ltd. of Fraser Lake have been recognized for outstanding business achievement in B.C.

Robert and Gladys Michell, owner-operators of Selkin Logging Ltd. & Michell Enterprise Ltd. of Fraser Lake have been recognized for outstanding business achievement in B.C. The couple were among 11 honored in their category during the 2010 Aboriginal Business Awards gala Dec. 1 in Vancouver.

"This year's Aboriginal Business Award recipients represent the growing number of outstanding Aboriginal business leaders in British Columbia," said Barry Penner, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation. "These role models will encourage the next generation of Aboriginal people to bring their entrepreneurial ideas to life."

Gladys is the granddaughter of the late Mary John, a Carrier elder who devoted her life to improving the lives of aboriginal people, to preserving language and traditions and to building bridges between cultures. Her life story is recounted in the book Stoney Creek Woman, written by her long-time friend, the late Bridget Moran.

"My mom would have been so proud of them for all their achievements," said Bernice Spicer, who is John's daughter and mother of Gladys.
