Tomorrow (March 6) marks a special day in Prince George!

It’s the City’s 106th birthday, which, according to a release today (March 5), matches the number of kilometres of trail within its limits.

Parks and other areas of renowned scenery are included among that statistic, such as Forests for the World, the UNBC Connector and the Cranbrook Hill Greenway.

And with that in mind, the city is encouraging the public to explore local trails.

“Although people have lived here in the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh for much longer, Saturday, March 6, is the City’s 106th anniversary,” reads a city statement. The City of Prince George was incorporated in 1915.

“And due to the fact that trails are more popular than ever during the pandemic and the weather this weekend looks to be relatively mild, the City is encouraging residents to mark the occasion by venturing out to explore a few of the 106 kilometres we have at our boot-tips.”

If you plan on walking, riding a bike, snowshoeing or other ways to get around local parks and trails, the city is also asking residents to practice safe social distancing and to stay with your family bubble.

Signs are set up at city-sanctioned areas with those reminders, as well as:

  • Watch out and be ready for natural hazards like falling tree branches, uneven or slippery trails, etc.
    • There is limited trail maintenance during the winter months
  • Always be on the alert for wildlife
    • Make noise, travel in groups, and never approach or feed wildlife
    • Report any bear sightings to the BC Conservation Office at 1-877-952-7277
