Northern BC Crime Stoppers host its annual Shred It event on Saturday at the PGSS parking lot.

Taking the bite out of crime has its rewards.

For years, Northern BC Crime Stoppers has been paying out cash prizes of up to $2,000 to people who come forward with information about a crime that leads to an arrest or seizure of illegal drugs, weapons or stolen property.

To pay those tipsters, the organization depends on donations obtained through community fund-raisers. One of those events is the annual Drive Thru Fall Shred It this Saturday at the Prince George Secondary School parking lot at 2901 Griffiths Ave.

From 10 a.m.-2 p.m., people can bring personal and important documents they would like to have shredded to prevent identity theft.

Northern BC Crime Stoppers will be teaming up with Shred-It Mobile Shredding Services and PGSS volunteers to provide the service for a minimum donation of $5 per box.

Everybody who drops by to have their documents shredded is required to wear a mask and follow social distancing requirements. The Shred-It event is not geared to business owners.

Working independently from the RCMP, Crime Stoppers makes it a priority to protect the identity of its tipsters and want to know who is supplying the information. Phone numbers or internet provider addresses are not recorded. Tipsters are given a code number which is used to anonymously update information and collect the rewards.
