It's been a while since people have seen the Pucks in Prince George. It's been a longer while since Summerfest has been in Prince George.
The folk rock trio will take to the open-air mainstage at Sixth and Quebec during Sunday's free downtown Summerfest at 6 p.m.
The Pucks have been around for 23 years and haven't played here for a couple of years. Summerfest is making its own comeback after a five-year lapse.
The Pucks include musicians Cindy Larsen Marcotte, who plays percussion, harmonica and vocals, Lloyd Larsen who plays tuba, sousaphone, bass and various other instruments and Murray Gable who is on guitar and vocals.
"I'm really glad we're performing at Summerfest," said Larsen Marcotte. "I think it's going to be really neat to be a part of this and I hope to see a lot of people out that have been to our concerts in years past."
The Pucks have played a lot of festivals and performed on many outdoor stages.
"I like outdoor venues," said Larsen Marcotte. "It provides a great festival atmosphere. When you're playing in a festival environment you like to keep the music reasonably upbeat. So we scan over the crowd and adapt our material accordingly. We're there to play for the crowd not for ourselves."
The Pucks have four albums of music to choose from so they will perform crowd pleasers like Maniac Morning, No More Little Woman that really gets the ladies going, Fishin' or Something and More Than Just a Woman.
The latest news in the Pucks world is that the trio has a pair of songs featured in a movie called Beast of Bottomless Lake, produced by Provost Pictures, which is making the film festival circuit and has been picked up by Super Channel. Featured songs are More Than Just a Woman and Fishin' or Something. There's a trailer for the movie at http://www.provostpictures.com/ that includes a snippet of Fishin' or Something.
"We were just in Vancouver playing at the screening of the movie," said Larsen Marcotte. "We had a lot of fun. It's something really different for us."
Over the last year and a half the Pucks have taken a step back and given themselves a bit of a sabbatical, said Larsen Marcotte, who got married in the meantime.
"So now we're getting back into it and there's even a possibility of changing the name and restructuring our group just to do something fresh and revisit what we're doing, get some new material going and write some new songs," she added.
The Pucks have been performing for years at a hectic pace.
"I think when you're doing music a lot like we've done it, you need to sometimes take a step back so that you can make it fresh again," Larsen Marcotte explained. "We all love to play and we all love to play together. We've done a couple of gigs this summer and we've just had an absolute ball."
Summerfest, presented by the Downtown Business Improvement Association and the Prince George Citizen, takes place Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Civic Plaza and along Quebec Street with activities along Sixth and Seventh Avenue. There will be children's activities, the Wood Wheaton Supercentre Taste Pavilion, Artisan Alley and exhibitor booths. On the schedule for the mainstage is Rick Stavely, Anywhere Road, War Dub, Sound Addiction and a few surprises are in store as well that you'll have to see to believe.
