The Prince George Symphony Orchestra has a blast every fall with Pops in the Park. This weekend, the young musicians of the city are going to do the same thing to close out the school year. The District 57 Honour Band will do their own kind of Pops in the Park on Saturday at Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park.

"It will be a fun and casual event with some great music performed by elite musicians chosen from our four band programs," said DP Todd secondary school band teacher Susan Klein on behalf of the collected high school performance groups.

The youth performers will play a wide range of musical selections like the Jurassic Park theme, Shrek Dance Party, Highlights from Moana and other pieces that might be fun or familiar to young and old alike in the audience.

"The district high school band teachers coordinate, rehearse and conduct this event," Klein explained.

"Over the past five weeks, 55 students selected from DP Todd, Duchess Park, PGSS and College Heights have been working together to prepare an hour of fun music for the public."

The other band program directors include Sam Nelles (PGSS), Rob Hannigan (CHSS) and Jon Campbell (Duchess Park).

These band teachers, all the student performers and the volunteer crew and supporters are all hoping for sunshine, so beach blankets, lawn chairs, sunglasses and sunscreen are all on wish list.

The Environment Canada long-range forecast is indeed optimistic for Saturday but should inclement weather force the event indoors, the backup plan is Duchess Park Theatre where the show will absolutely go on. Rain or shine, the music starts at 2:30 p.m.
