To study the art of sonwriting may not come often but to win a scholarship to attend a writing workshop with pop-culture legend Dave Bidini is a rare bird indeed.

The contest is open to emerging and professional songwriters who submit entries. Entries will be judged on originality, melody, composition, and lyrics.

This is an invaluable opportunity for both aspiring and established songwriters to nurture their songwriting on all levels while working with their peers and being mentored by a senior songwriter.

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Friday, May 27 and the winner will be announced by June 4.

To enter, send one song, along with a typed lyric sheet, your name, address and telephone number to Song Writing Contest, Island Mountain Arts, PO Box 65, Wells, B.C., V0K 2R0.

You can also enter by e-mail by sending the above information and an MP3 to [email protected]. The song must be original.

The prize package includes full tuition worth $440 paid to attend the four-day intensive song writing workshop in Wells with Dave Bidini from July 26 to 29.

The top prize also includes a coveted performance spot at the 2011 ArtsWells Festival (www.artswells.com), which begins on the last day of the workshop. The workshop runs Friday, July 29 Monday, August 1. The winner also gets a profile interview and the opportunity to have their music played on CBC Radio's North by Northwest with Sheryl MacKay.

A runner up prize package includes full tuition worth $440 paid to attend the four-day intensive songwriting workshop and weekend pass to the 8th Annual ArtsWells Festival, July 29 to Aug. 1.
