The Community Arts Council of Prince George along with the Prince George Symphony Orchestra and the Prince George Conservatory of Music will be holding the first-ever Young Canadian Music Festival from Oct. 20-22.

The three-day music festival will bring together students, professional musicians and local youth for an extravaganza of education and performance opportunities in celebration of Canada's sesquicentennial anniversary.

Participation in all events will be open to musicians age 19 and under, at no charge.

"There's always been a big visual arts element in Prince George so we thought that together with the Symphony Orchestra and the Conservatory of Music, we could bring it all together," said Sean Farrell, executive director with Studio 2880.

The festival will feature workshops and performance opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to work with top music professionals as well as the chance to perform alongside the PGSO and PGCM faculty.

"This is our first festival and we've had a great response so far. We want this to be an accessible event for everyone," Farrell said.

"The workshops offered are with some amazing Canadian artists including: Simon Cole, (composition) Lori Elder, (piano) Melanie Nicol, (voice) Allison Bell, (strings) and Laszlo Klein (brass/winds)," Farrell said.

Workshops will take place on Oct. 20 at the PGCM at 3555 Fifth Ave. On Oct. 21, the PGCM will be hosting the PGSO's annual Youth Concerto Competition at 2 p.m.

At 7 p.m., a Faculty Recital will take place which will feature selected workshop participants as well as PGSO members and PGSM faculty.

On Oct. 22 at 2 p.m., the PGSO's O Canada! Concert will feature selected workshop participants and as soloists.

All events will be free to participants, and their families will receive a discounted ticket price for the Sunday PGSO concert.

Interested participants are invited to contact the PGCM or Studio 2880.

You can also reach the PGCM office at 250-564-7467 or [email protected] and the Studio 2880 office at 250-563-2880.
