Tonight, the sounds of New York, the blazing history of the great Big Apple theatre district, will be rolling off the tongues of some of this city's best choral singers.
The all-female all-adult choir Nove Voce (pronounced no-vay voe-chay) presents one of their annual feature concerts at the Prince George Playhouse. This year the theme of the evening is Broadway's Best.
According to Nove Voce choral leader Robin Norman, the repertoire will include numbers from the classic age of Broadway like Many A New Day by Rogers and Hammerstein, through to some of the Broadway smashes of today's resurgent musical theatre wave like the tune Schuyler Sisters from Hamilton. Norman has prepared some Cole Porter, some Leonard Bernstein, some Andrew Lloyd Webber, Maury Yeston's Titanic, Jason Robert Brown's Parade, and Dan Goggin's Nunsense to name but a fraction.
"So many of the members of Nove Voce are strong soloists. It only made sense to feature everyone during this concert," said Norman.
"Zarrah Holvick, Aimee Paul and Andrea Brown - all seasoned local performers - will be featured in Omigod You Guys from Legally Blonde, while Amy Blanding, Carmen Beattie and Eve Ghostkeeper will be some of our Merry Murderesses in Cell Block Tango from Chicago.
"The women of Nove Voce are diverse, from professors to nurses to college students, so it only makes sense that the music we perform is as well," Norman added. "Mama I'm a Big Girl Now (from the soundtrack of the recent hit play Hairspray and the movie of the same name) will feature our three youngest members Courtney Hayhurst, Susie MacRae and Amy Chester."
The musical accompaniment will be provided by longtime local piano favourite Maureen Nielsen along with some additional piano provided by fast-rising local keyboard star Patrick Kilcullen.
Tickets are $20, available today in advance from Books & Company, or at the P.G. Playhouse door while supplies last. Showtime is 7:30 p.m.
