McGinty joining Celtic Thunder

Celtic Thunder just made a new rumble.

Celtic Thunder just made a new rumble.

The already popular Irish music act - a set of accomplished singers working with a powerful band of musicians amidst a dramatic array of Celtic set-pieces and lighting effects - announced on Tuesday that an old friend was coming to their Prince George show. From the hit TV show Glee, Damian McGinty would be live and in person in the cast.

It's a spot in which McGinty is comfortable. He was the youngest member of the Celtic Thunder cast when he entered and won The Glee Project, a realty show contest on Oxygen Network that helped gather talent for what would become the television phenomenon Glee that helped define the 2010s-era of popular culture.

McGinty, the only non-American on the reality audition show, ended up one of the two top winners. He then played the character Rory Flanagan in seasons three and four of the ber-popular show.

"In less than a decade, Damian McGinty has gone from a virtually unknown singer in his local church choir, to an internationally adored singer and actor with a fan base almost 10 times the size of his hometown population," said a Celtic Thunder statement. McGinty comes from Derry, Northern Ireland. He is 22, now, but was still 14 when he was recruited into the inaugural Celtic Thunder storm.

That means, for those who know the history of the group's tours to Prince George, that the young star was on-stage at CN Centre in 2009 when they first came to this city. He was doing Glee when the roadshow returned in 2013. Now he is back with CT and CT is back in PG.

The group said "his unmistakable talent and charisma quickly catapulted him into fame and success" and they were glad to once again showcase "his friendly charm and his deep baritone voice."

The group has 11 albums to their credit, numerous television appearances including multiple PBS specials, they have 10 concert DVDs on store shelves, and a set of merchandise inspired by the Celtic folk symbols upon which their group was founded.

Celtic Thunder shakes the stage at CN Centre on March 14. Tickets are on sale at the CN Centre box office, Studio 2880, or online.
