Jonathan Crow, born and raised in Prince George, is now the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) concertmaster.
The recent announcement also stated Crow's debut will take place at the symphony's opening night Sept. 22.
"There is an energy and vibrancy about the Toronto Symphony Orchestra that I want to be a part of," said Crow in a recent news release. "I'm delighted to be joining this amazing group of musicians and I look forward to beginning my role as concertmaster."
Crow was a founding member of the New Orford String Quartet and between 2002 and 2006 was the youngest concertmaster of a major North American orchestra as Montreal Symphony Orchestra's concertmaster.
Crow is the current associate professor of violin at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University and will perform as many as 14 concert weeks at TSO as he makes the transition. Crow will move to Toronto with his wife and two children before the symphony's season begins.
The TSO's last concertmaster, Jacques Israelievitch, retired at the end of the 2007/08 season.
Crow will be featured as a soloist in two orchestra programs: Beethoven's Romance No. 2 for Violin and Orchestra (Sept. 29, Oct. 1 and 2 with TSO music director Peter Oundjian); and J.S. Bach's Concerto for Oboe and Violin, and Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 (Oct. 15 and 16 with TSO conductor laureate Sir Andrew Davis).
"The concertmaster search committee and I were overwhelmingly impressed with Jonathan's performance and talent," said TSO music director Peter Oundjian. "Jonathan has inherent leadership skills and we are thrilled to have him as part of our orchestra."
