It was during the North Central Seniors' Association year-end celebration where the fun-loving group enjoyed the last Seniors' Follies Friday morning in the basement of College Heights Baptist Church.
Howard Foot, past president, and organizer of the Seniors' Follies for at least the last four years, thought it might be time to hang up his potato bowling, paper airplane flying, stick horse racing ways.
The seniors' group, whose mandate is to provide socialization and meals to seniors, showed their appreciation for his efforts as only they could by presenting him with a trophy that declared him King of the Follies.
"We always showed up for those silly seniors games," said Lorraine D'Auray, president of the North Central Seniors, said during her presentation to Foot.
"Thank you, Howard, for those fantastic and magical moments you gave us. We will never forget."
"Thank you very much," Foot said, and promptly relayed one of the little gems he finds online.
"On her 60th birthday a woman told her husband she wanted to be 10 again. So that morning they had a heaping stack of chocolate chip pancakes that were a childhood favourite, they then made their way to the playground to the merry-go-round and ended the day by eating banana splits.
"He said 'so how did you enjoy being 10 again?' and she said 'great, but when I said I wanted to be 10 again I was talking about my dress size!"
Foot always brings down the house with his anecdotes, D'Auray laughed.
During the series of Follies that spanned Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning filled with activities, participants took up the challenge to make their own paper airplane and promptly throw for distance, they played the ladder toss game (not what it sounds like) and the ever-popular elephant-in-the-room game where a tennis ball is placed in one leg of a pair of pantyhose and then worn on the participant's head who then swings the ball hands-free to knock down a series of water bottles in a race against time.
"Howard always comes up with the best games," D'Auray said. "We'll miss all the fun we have."
The seniors' group is now on summer hiatus with most of their usual activities resuming during the first week of September.
