An all-girl a cappella group is looking for members to round out their sound.

The Sweet Adelines, a four-part harmony, barbershop-style group, are asking anyone that can carry a tune to join the fun in time for a Christmas show to be held Nov. 26 at the Elder Citizens Recreation Association Centre.

Instead of making the usual year-long commitment this opportunity will allow interested singers to try it out for a couple of months before they decide if they want to join on a more permanent basis.

There are currently 18 members in the group and at their peak there was as many as 30. The chorus would like to reach those numbers again, said Kathleen O'Connell, a seven-year member.

The local chorus is part of the Sweet Adelines International that sing popular music that has been adapted for female voices in tenor, bass, lead line and baritone.

"A big part of the organization is musical education and vocal training," said O'Connell, who sings bass. "So people who are interested in joining don't have to read music but they do need to be able to carry a tune. After that they receive good vocal training and coaches come in twice a year and the group participates in a western Canadian competition that keeps our standard at a certain level."

The other focus for Sweet Adelines, also known as the White Spruce City Chorus, is to sing for their community, O'Connell added.

"When we are invited to attend community events we try our best to be there," said O'Connell. The group has sung at Prince George Community Arts Council's Studio Fair, and the national anthem at the World Baseball Challenge and other special occasions.

The holiday show will feature a Christmas and Lumberjack theme, O'Connell said.

"It's kind of fun," she said. "So if we do get new singers out now and they don't want to commit to it for the whole year, they can participate just for the Christmas show and learn some new songs."

Anyone interested in participating should go to a practice every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Studio 2880, 2880 Fifteenth Avenue, Jack Bryan Room. For more information call 250-563-2975.
