In partnership with the Two Rivers Gallery, Northern Health is calling out for artists to submit their ideas for a significant piece of new aboriginal art at the University Hospital of Northern B.C.

The project is the initiative of the Prince George & Area Aboriginal Health Improvement Committee.

"Northern Health wants to welcome and celebrate First Nations by commissioning an original work," said a joint statement issued by the committee.

"The health authority is looking for proposals for an art installation at University Hospital.

"The art piece will welcome visitors in the Carrier language, and acknowledge the Lheidli T'enneh Nation."

The art piece will, said the committee, "offer a learning experience to non-indigenous people and provide presence of indigenous inclusion in health care facilities that can be a source of comfort for indigenous patients and visitors of health care."

In communities across the province, similar committees are looking for local ways to boost that connection between healthcare users and a sense of aboriginal culture.

To make the most of this artful initiative in Prince George, whichever art design is selected, created and installed at UHNBC, that will be photographed and the image placed in other care-sites and Northern Health facilities across the city.

The deadline for submissions is Monday. For more details, contact Julia Petrasek MacDonald at 250-565-7338 or email [email protected].

The online application form can be found on the Two Rivers Gallery website. Go to their blog page (www.tworiversgallery.ca/blog) and click the Calling All Indigenous Artists heading.
