The beautifully costumed Yalenka Ukrainian Dancers will hold their annual spring concert Vesna at the Prince George Playhouse Saturday at 7 p.m.

There will be 28 dancers performing group numbers during the presentation of a play called A Trip Through Ukraine, where a variety of regional dances will be showcased.

Six senior girls just returned from the 16th annual B.C. Ukrainian cultural festival in Mission with three gold medals and a trophy for their Polissian dance routine. They were competing against dancers from B.C. as well as Alberta.

The dancers range in age from three years to 18, in categories of beginner, junior, intermediate and senior.

"The senior dance troupe just got their new costumes direct from the Ukraine," said Liz Folwark, of the Yalenka Ukrainian Cultural Society. "They used those costumes in their Polissian dance routine."

The Yalenka Ukrainian dancers perform throughout the year at various community venues, including seniors complexes, birthday parties, and the Mardi Gras.

Known for their acrobatic, high-energy performances, the Yalenka dancers and their parent organization, the Yalenka Ukrainian Cultural Society, have been in existence in Prince George since 1979.

Tickets for the spring showcase are $15 for adults, $10 for students and seniors and children five and under are free. Tickets are available at the door or in advance by calling Liz at 250-563-4974 or Debra at 250-964-8877.
