To commemorate the country's 2010 Olympic success, the Prince George Symphony Orchestra (PGSO) will take over hosting this year's Spirit Festival in Prince George with events that encourage community engagement in arts and cultural activities.

One of the events, the Spirit of The One Song Festival, is set to celebrate the abundance of art and culture in our region, and will include many events throughout the city.

One Song tells of a land where all things are bound together in harmony by a common musical thread or song. The festival is where music, dance, dramatic and visual arts unite, and where the community as a whole can hear the power of a common melody.

Also on display at Two Rivers Gallery is a living arts exhibit where artists Maureen Faulkner, Milan Basic and Keith Carlson merge their creations with Simon Cole's musical composition, appropriately entitled The One Song.

The public is inspiration at work as the artists respond to the music in the Rustad Galleria.

Visit www.pgso.com and www.tworiversartgallery.com for more information.

Also happening during the festival:

Saturday at 2 p.m. members of the PGSO and the Prince George public library will join to treat young audiences to a free multi-media performance of The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins by Dr. Seuss.

Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. the symphony performs the Classic Love concert with piano sensation David Louie at Vanier Hall.

On Friday, Feb. 18 at 7 p.m. the PGSO will join the Elizabeth Fry Society fundraiser with guest artist Shante Van Horlick at the Ramada.

Saturday, Feb. 26 sees the conclusion of the festival with the art reception and grand performance at the Coast Inn of The North. Tickets are on sale now for the event that will span many arts and cultural spheres.

The evening begins with an art reception with B.C. appetizers and wine and an exhibit of more than 20 regional artists displaying an array of works from many artistic disciplines. The lineup for the stage performance is truly a picture of the community's arts and culture united in one song as Judy Russell's Enchainment Dance Centre, Out of Alba, Serious Moonlight Productions, story teller A.J. Mittendorf, the District 57 Tapestry Singers, and performance painter, Cat Sivertsen, join the PGSO for a unique evening of entertainment. The evening concludes with the PGSO performing The One Song, the signature musical composition by local composer Simon Cole with mezzo-soprano Marion Newman and narrator Marcel Gagnon.

February also brings the Spirit of The One Song Festival into the schools as members of the PGSO perform at South Ridge elementary, Aboriginal Choice school and UNBC-Bentley Centre. Douglas Lamb of the P.G. photography club has designed special photographic visuals for the performance.

Admission is $22.50 per person. Tickets available at Books & Co., Studio 2880 and the PGSO office. For more information about any event call the PGSO office at 250-562-0800 or e-mail Shelley Sivell at ssivell@telus.net.
