A documentary looking at Highway Of Tears issues has begun filming in the local area and a fundraiser is being held on Friday to help the directors continue their work.
"This is a self-funded student project. It arose out of my thesis. I'm a masters student in journalism and the focus of the documentary is my thesis," said University of Regina student Tennessa Wild, who grew up in Houston, one of the communities along the infamous length of Highway 16.
"When you have to decide on a thesis, you look to what's important and impactful and being raised along the Highway of Tears myself, it was definitely a topic that I was aware of and I thought would evoke social change."
The fundraiser is a combination of auction and entertainment event featuring singer-songwriter Kym Gouchie and the Khast'an Drummers and a feature print by Cree artist Jane Ash Poitras.
The event is named Building On The Rock and is advertised as a tribute to private investigator Ray Michalko who recently passed away after many years of investigations into the Highway of Tears cases.
The event happens at 5:30 p.m. Friday at St. Michael's & All Angels Church at 5th Avenue and Victoria Street. Admission is by donation.
