Muwahaha. The evil laugh must be perfected in time for Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog opening Friday night at UNBC's Canfor Theatre.
UNBC Drama club presents the musical comedy because biology student, producer, director, star Arielle Bernier loves Joss Whedon's show and wants to share it.
Dr. Horrible, super villain, tries to take over the world, defeat arch nemesis Captain Hammer, corporate tool, and get Penny, the girl of his dreams.
Working on the production for more than a year, things finally started to fall into place so cast, crew, sets, props, costumes and venue all line up to present three shows; Friday night at 7 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
"We cast the show in September and we've been working on it since October," said former Dawson Creek resident Bernier, who starred in musicals in high school, with leads in -- you guessed it -- High School Musical, Cats and a Chorus Line. Leads include Michael Horinopoulos as Dr. Horrible, Max Buchner as Captain Hammer, Arielle Bernier as Penny and Neil Brooks as Dr. Horrible's sidekick Moist. Derek Warner is directing music, sound, lights and doing most of the grunt work Bernier can't.
Mentor Dawn Boudreau, local blues singer and teacher, helped Bernier with the musicality of the show as well as casting characters.
"Dawn gave free music lessons and a workshop to my cast," said Bernier. "I couldn't have done the show without her. She's incredible."
The plot of the play is filled with unexpected turns.
"The villain is actually the protagonist and the hero is the antagonist," said Bernier. "It's a great show filled with lots of laughs. We stick to the original story and we adapted it to present it live."
