The Prince George Academy of Music is looking for students to join the children's choir.

The academy started in '07 when Paul Brett thought there was a lack of services on the Hart Highway.

"The church was there and there's not a lot happening during the week and I thought well, this might be a great venue for something like this to happen," said Brett. "It's been a non-profit venture since the beginning and it's been very well received by people who live on the Hart."

The academy offers lessons in piano, violin or fiddle, guitar, saxophone, drums, voice, double bass and mandolin.

"And yes we have a mandolin student," said Brett with a laugh. "We also have a children's choir."

There is also a pre-school program for children aged 1 to 4 that will begin in January.

The choir meets Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the academy is looking for children between the ages of seven and 11 to join.

Therese Martin is the leader of the children's choir and has a bachelor of science from UBC and holds her B.C. College of Teachers certification. Martin has many years of experience as a singer, pianist, accompanist, teacher and has trained with Michele Jacques as a Kindermusik facilitator.

"We want to promote the joy of singing and music literacy," said Brett. "There will also be performance opportunities for the children."

Anyone interested in joining the choir can call 778-415-5000 or e-mail info@pgacademy.ca.
