Teen artists get their chance to shine in the new year.
The Prince George Public Library and the Community Arts Council have teamed up with the Kiwanis Club to give talented local youth a show event of their own. The organizers also included some mentorship, and threw in some constructive competition to add extra engagement.
A workshop was already held where teen artists got to work with established artists for a day in November. Now, the youth focus moves to the next phase.
Teen artists have until Jan. 25 to submit original artwork for consideration in the 2018 Teen Art Showcase. Those selected will be included in an all-youth group exhibition.
"There is no entry fee, you just need to be in Grades 8-12 (ages 12 to 18) and a resident of P.G.," said a statement by the organizers.
One entry per artist will be accepted for consideration. Submissions will be accepted in the following formats: digital, fine arts, aboriginal, traditional or sculptural.
"Art supplies are available through the Community Arts Council for any participating youth artist who does not have access to supplies," organizers said.
Any questions about how artwork should be submitted can be directed to 250-562-4526.
Those who are selected for the show will also be included in a competition. Five prizes of $200 (provided by the Kiwanis Club) will be granted to the winners of the following categories: Most Original, Best Use of Materials, People's Choice, Best Overall, and Social Commentary.
"Your work will be exhibited at the P.G. Public Library for the entire month of February and you will be hosted at a special reception announcing the prize winners on Feb. 24," organizers said.
Should the participating artists wish to sell their pieces on display, that is an open option but not mandatory.
