Pocket Theatre is calling for community actors.
Auditions are being held for the local volunteer drama company's first show of the new season. The play they've chosen is The Weir, written by Conor McPherson. He is one of Ireland's top theatrical writers of the modern age and The Weir is one of his most awarded and acclaimed productions.
Pocket Theatre director Dominic Maguire sets the scene.
"A bar in a remote part or Ireland: the local lads are swapping spooky stories to impress a young woman from Dublin newly moved in to the area. But she turns the tables on them."
In the end, there is a lot of pent up memory and emotion set loose like only bars and campfires seem able to uncork. The disclosures reel from one to another as haunting recollections are given voice, and maybe some of the haunting reaches right into the supernatural and maybe it doesn't.
"We need four men and one woman. The male ages cover a wide range from 25 to 65 and the only real requirement being that there is a noticeable gap between them," said Maguire. "The female's age will ideally be in the late 20s to early 30s."
Some of the actors who have taken a turn in these roles include major names like the legendary Brian Cox, Brendan Coyle (Downton Abbey), Nadine Garner (The Book of Revelation), Michelle Fairley (Game Of Thrones), and many more.
"The audition will not require preparing scenes as we'll work straight from the script," Maguire said.
Auditions will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at Art Space (upstairs at Books & Company) with the open option of future auditions the following week, should there be more auditionees than the one session can accommodate.
The production will be staged in January. Exact dates are still to be confirmed.
