A Fort St. James man who was shot during an altercation with Prince George RCMP nearly two years ago now faces criminal charges.

The B.C. Prosecution Service has approved counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault of a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and resisting arrest against Thomas Arthur Prince, 36, police said Wednesday.

The counts stem from a May 31, 2021 incident

Statements from the RCMP and the Independent Investigations Office at the time indicate the man had been the subject of a "traffic stop" at the rear of the North Star motel property on Victoria Street shortly before 7 a.m.

An altercation between the man and an RCMP officer broke out and the officer "discharged their firearm striking the man," and he was taken to hospital with a "serious, life-threatening gunshot injury."

The IIO confirmed Wednesday that the incident remains under investigation by the civilian-based watchdog that looks into incidents of serious injury or death for evidence of criminal wrongdoing by police.
