A man is in hospital fighting for his life after he was shot during an altercation with police on Monday morning.

In a statement, B.C.'s civilian-based police watchdog, the Independent Investigations Office, confirmed it has been called in to investigate an "officer-involved shooting."

Statements from the RCMP and the IIO indicate the man had been the subject of a "traffic stop" at the rear of the North Star motel property at Victoria Street and Sixth Avenue shortly before 7 a.m.

An altercation between the man and an RCMP officer broke out and the officer "discharged their firearm striking the man," and he was taken to hospital with a "serious, life-threatening gunshot injury."

A portion at the back of the North Star property remained taped off as of Monday afternoon and investigators remained on the scene.

The IIO investigates police-involved serious injuries and deaths to determine if there is enough evidence to recommend criminal prosecution.

Prince George RCMP, meanwhile, said police are investigating whether the man was wielding a weapon in the incident.

Names of those involved were not released.
