Mount Robson trails to stay closed until at least end of July

Ranger's photos show boulder-covered bridge from flash flood

Clean up and repairs along three trails in Mount Robson Provincial Park struck by flash flooding during the Canada Day long weekend will take longer than first expected.

Berg Lake, Mount Fitzwilliam and Moose River trails will remain closed until July 31, BC Parks said in an update posted Friday, nearly two weeks longer than the  July 18 date originally anticipated.

The area was hit by a triple-whammy of high snowpack, a heat wave and then torrential rain that forced backpackers to retreat either on foot or by helicopter to safer ground.

In an online posting, Park Ranger Sean Allin said it was so big the base of a hill in the Emperor Falls drainage gave way and sent a wall of debris towards the steel bridge.

“A wall of rock and debris about 20 feet high covered the bridge and surrounding area,” Allin said.
