Mavis Erickson has been acclaimed as the federal Liberal candidate for the Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies riding.

The Liberals made the announcement yesterday (Sept. 25), noting Erickson's “extensive local, provincial, and federal political and social experiences” as a twice-elected Carrier Sekani Tribal Chief and First Nations lawyer.

"As your Member of Parliament for Prince George-Peace River-Northern Rockies, I will ensure northern diversity and inclusion in decision making," Erickson said in a statement. "We sit on a vast region of wealth that must serve the North and its people. The importance and power of linking Northern communities for economic and social change is integral to the continued development of healthy citizens and communities and my motivation to represent you in Ottawa."

Erickson, who practices law in Prince George, is a graduate of Harvard Law School.

She has worked as co-ordinator for the Carrier Sekani Tribal Council, B.C. Ending Violence Association, and Human Rights Watch, and was the Highway of Tears Coordinator for Carrier Sekani Family Services.

Erickson is the fourth major party candidate in the riding, and will be formally introduced at a press conference in Prince George Thursday afternoon.

Incumbent MP Bob Zimmer of Fort St. John is seeking a third term for the Conservatives.

Catharine Kendall of Eaglet Lake is running for the Green Party.

Ron Vaillant of Lacombe, Alta., is running for the People’s Party.

The satirical Rhino Party has said it has nominated Jacob "Turkman" Stokes as candidate.
