In the eyes of the head coach, Megan Stewart has the qualities to become an impact player for the UNBC Timberwolves women's basketball team.

Stewart, a five-foot-11 forward from Maple Ridge, is coach Sergey Shchepotkin's latest recruit for the 2017-18 Canada West season and beyond. Her commitment to the team was announced on Tuesday.

"Megan has all the tools to become a big contributor for us," Shchepotkin said. "She has a great combination of size and speed. What stands out about Megan is her willingness to work on her skills. She has great desire to improve and that will help her, and us, for years to come."

Stewart is a fresh graduate of Samuel Robertson Technical School in Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows. This past season, she helped establish her team, the Titans, as one of the top clubs in the Fraser Valley zone. In her highest-scoring game, she knocked down 34 points against the Rick Hansen Hurricanes of Clearbrook.

Stewart visited UNBC during spring break and decided Prince George was where she wanted to play basketball and attend school.

"I was able to practice with the team and everyone was so welcoming," she said. "The school had an amazing atmosphere. I loved the smaller class sizes, and that it is an environmentally-friendly university."

On the court this coming season, Stewart will focus on sharpening her skills as much as possible.

"I really want to work hard and push my game to the limits," she said. "I am really looking forward to learning a lot from my coaches and my teammates.

"I have loved basketball for as long as I remember so it is a dream come true getting to play the game at the university level."

Academically, Stewart is interested in biology and resource management.

Stewart will be back in Prince George in August for the start of training camp.
