U16 boys kick to B.C. soccer gold

The Prince George Youth Soccer Association Under-16 boys team exacted a measure of revenge against Surrey Liverpool in Penticton on Sunday.

Two years after Surrey beat them at the U14 Les Sinnott Memorial Boys Provincial B Cup, the Timberwolves turned the tables in their favour at the U16 level in the gold-medal final.

The Timberwolves shut out Surrey 1-0 on a goal from Tyler Macsemniuk to capture the gold medal and the U16 B Cup title.

The first half of the match was intense with numerous chances by the Timberwolves but the score remained 0-0.

As time ticked down in the second half, Anthony Preston sent a powerful header to Colburn Pearce, who sent the ball to Macsemniuk with a perfect pass. Macsemniuk put the winning goal away at the 88th minute - two minutes left in the match.

The Timberwolves were the top side in their four-team Group 1, clinching victories against the Kootenay Selects (6-0), Kelowna United (2-1) and Kootenay East (1-0).

Their top ranking meant they faced Surrey, which finished first in Group 2 with a 3-0 record.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves U16 girls side won the Provincial B Cup silver medal after a 2-0 loss to Kelowna United in the championship final in Penticton.

Prince George finished first in its round-robin pool, securing victories against Pinnacles (3-1), the Chilliwack Attack (2-1) and the Williams Lake Storm (2-0). That meant the Timberwolves crossed over to face Kelowna in the gold-medal game. Kelowna was also the top team in its pool with a 3-0 record.

Meanwhile, the Timberwolves U14 girls squad posted a 2-2 record to finish fifth at the Provincial B Cup in Nelson, while the U14 boys side finished sixth with a 1-3 record at the Provincial B Cup in 100 Mile House.
