Special Olympians forming strike force

The lure of a national pins championship on the other side of the country will draw three local 10-pin bowlers and their striking abilities.

Yvonne LeRuyet, Michael Harris and Linda Renner will be part of Team B.C. at the 2018 Special Olympics Canada bowling championships in Charlottetown, P.E.I., May 15-19.

Winners of the national finals will qualify for the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The three Prince George bowlers qualified for the national event last year at the B.C. Special Olympics Summer Games in Kamloops.

The B.C. team of five- and 10-pin bowlers heading to Charlottetown will include 56 athletes, 12 coaches and three mission staff members. LeRuyet and Harris are first-time national qualifiers in bowling.

Renner represented Canada at the 2015 Special Olympics World Summer Games in Los Angeles and won the silver medal in the 10-pin team event with Austin Johnston of Abbotsford and Kara Summer of Cowichan Valley. Renner also placed fifth in doubles (with Summer) and finished sixth in singles.
