WHL regular-season champs will host deciding game Monday in Moose Jaw, winner advances to third round against Lethbridge
The Western Hockey League regular-season champion Moose Jaw Warriors staved off elimination Saturday night in Swift Current, defeating the Broncos 3-2 in triple overtime to force a seventh and deciding game Monday.
Jayden Halbegewachs scored his fourth of the playoffs on a Moose Jaw power play, 1:14 into the third overtime period. The goal came with Broncos defenceman Artyom Minulin in the penalty box for hooking.
Moose Jaw scored twice in the third period to overcome a 2-0 deficit. Brett Howden notched the tying goal 11:28 into the third, after Jett Woo had scored 6:43 into the period. Tyler Steenbergen gave the Warriors a two-goal lead 3:43 into the third period. Matteo Gennaro opened the scoring 13:43 into the second period.
Brody Wilms turned in a first-star performance in net for Moose Jaw, making 58 saves. Stuart Skinner took the loss after stopping 35 shots.
Game 7 will be played Monday night in Moose Jaw. The winner will host the first two games of the Eastern Conference championship series, which starts Friday.
The Everett Silvertips and Tri-City Americans begin their Western Conference championship series Friday in Everett, Wash.
