The Prince George Spruce Kings are doing their part to stay in the race for first place overall in the B.C. Hockey League.

They posted their fourth-straight victory Saturday at Rolling Mix Concrete Arena, winning 3-1 and completing a two-game weekend sweep of the Surrey Eagles to improve their season record to 31-12-1-5.

The Spruce Kings remain seven points behind the first-overall Chilliwack Chiefs (37-12-1-0). The defending RBC Cup national champion Chiefs beat the Penticton Vees 3-2 Saturday in Chilliwack.

Patrick Cozzi broke a scoreless deadlock four minutes into the second period on a Prince George power play and Tyler Schleppe and Layton Ahac scored in the third period. For Ahac, a defenceman with potential to be picked in the NHL draft, it was his first goal of the season.

Cole Edgerton was the only Surrey shooter to beat Keenan Rancier, a former Victoria Grizzly who made 10 saves to pick up his second win as a Spruce King and third in the BCHL this season.

The Kings outshot the Eagles 42-11.

Prince George began the weekend beating the Eagles 5-0 on Friday, outshooting Surrey 49-10.

The Spruce Kings play Monday in Langley in a makeup date to take the place of the Dec. 20 game in Coquitlam which was postponed due to a power failure caused by a windstorm. They’ll be on the road again this weekend with games in Coquitlam, Langley and Surrey.
