If the European standard for traffic signals was adopted, driving through red lights would be a thing of the past, and traffic flow would be sped up: turn on the amber light just before the green light is activated (i.e. apply the same warning as when going to red). Short-term, the bad and distracted drivers would get a needed wake-up call - if they can do this over there why not here.
