The Kamloops Daily News, sister paper to the Prince George Citizen will stop publishing in the next 60 days. Glacier Media, has given notice to its customers and unionized employees of the closure. Declining revenues and an inflexible cost structure made operation of the Kamloops paper unsustainable.
I have been asked what the closure of the Kamloops Daily News means for readers, customers and staff of the Prince George Citizen.
The Prince George Citizen remains a profitable business in a competitive and challenging sector. Like the entire industry across North America, we have struggled to maintain revenue levels, but in Prince George, we have worked hard to diversify our business. Working together, our staff and management team have found opportunities for savings and ways to reduce costs, at the same time launching new initiatives, such as an increase in web business and special programs.
We believe in the future of our business here in Prince George and we're proud that this community has supported The Citizen for 98 years and counting.
Local companies have trusted us to promote their businesses and residents have trusted us to give them the best news we can deliver six days per week in the paper, and on-line 24 hours a day. We will continue to support the community in return.
We are saddened by the planned closure of the Daily News and the job losses for our friends and colleagues. It has hit us close to home but it is also a hard reminder for all of us, management and staff, that we must continue to work hard to earn your loyalty, your trust and your business.
You can count on us to keep doing that, in the days, months and years ahead.
