Where's the benefit?

There has been a lot of rhetoric around the issue of the HST. Proponents say it is good for business, opponents say it is a tax shift from business to ordinary taxpayers. No one really backs up their statements with credible logic.

I have thought about the first opinion - HST good for business and have come up with off the cuff logic. Opponents say that the tax burden will increase by $400+ per year for the "average" family.

These families probably won't spend any extra money, so they will buy less goods and services. So let's do a little math.

There is approximately three million people in B.C., so at a rough guess there are what, maybe 500,000 'average' families multiplied by $400+ equals about $200 million less economic activity for B.C. business.

I fail to grasp how that could be good for business.
