Weaning ourselves off of carbon-based fuels

Mike Hawryluk, March 20.

I have to take issue with the tone of Mike Hawryluk's letter as much as with the opinion expressed. One sentence in particular caught my eye. It went "Please stop telling me what's good for me and dump the ridiculous rhetoric." That's not the way to discuss any topic. Everyone should be entitled to his or her opinion and opinions should be argued using logic and not dismissed with derogatory comments.

I take the side of Mr[?] Rader in this matter. I agree that we should not take the chance that carbon combustion will not have disastrous climate consequences but I wish to point out also that carbon based fuels are a finite resource. Eventually they will be used up and people will need other energy sources like it or not. I believe that we should worry most about the time when carbon fuels begin to become scarce. At that time prices will rise to the point where some people will not be able to afford them. Then we will begin to see serious social disruption. There is no doubt a criminal element will try to take advantage of the situation. And in the worst case scenario, haves and have-nots are going to make war on each other. I don't expect to see anything of the sort in my lifetime, but some generations in the future will face the consequences of our generation and the next doing nothing about weaning the species from its dependance on oil. I don't like to think that there will be people carrying my genes in those days and I did not at very least argue for them.
