Walking, hiking, running, biking. Moore's Meadow has it all

HIKE OF THE WEEK

Moore's Meadow

This week's hike to Moore's Meadow is one of the city's most unique geological features. This meadow lies in a deep depression which is an old glacial kettle. The highlight of the trail is walking through the open grass filled meadow in the bottom of the bowl which is surrounded by a swath of trembling aspen trees. The trail is an excellent choice for year round activities as it can be hiked, biked, skied and also a great place to take your dog for a walk. The locals who live in the area utilize and cherish this hidden treasure which can only be seen by hiking down one of the many access points.

Directions

From the junction of Foothills Boulevard and 5th Ave, drive 1.5 km north to the main Moores Meadow parking lot. Turn right into the parking area.

There are trails throughout the meadow as well as numerous access trails to the surrounding subdivisions. The main trail heads off to the left from the parking area. There are many other access points to the meadow. A few of these include: the old Meadow Elementary School, Clare Crescent, First Avenue and Otway Road.

All the trails start above the meadow and descend down through the forest to the meadow. It is relatively easy hiking and suitable for people of all ages and abilities. A nice loop to explore the meadow would be to start off Foothills Blvd and walk down into the meadow. Once in the meadow, the trail does a full loop around the edge of the meadow and heads back up to Foothills Blvd.

For more information on this hike including airphotos, maps, GPS coordinates and trail photos refer the book Hiking Central BC which is available at local bookstores.
