As a senior and resident in Vanderhoof, I have become frustrated being directly effected by the recent news about operation waiting lists.

The stated wait times in effect are 180 days for orthopedic surgeries which has proven to be incorrect.

Presently I am an active energetic 76 year old retired marine engineer in reasonably good physical health.

Over a year ago I was diagnosed with advanced austio arthritis in the right knee, accompanied with seven years previously diagnosed with austio arthritis in the left knee.

I have non-insulin diabetes which I have controlled by diet and exercise and have maintained my medical condition well within limits for over three years

My diabetes relies directly on continual daily exercise to maintain good health.

With advanced austio arthritis (bone on bone), the advancing deterioration of my right knee severely restricts all physical walking, including up and down stairs, even with medical brace supports on both knees.

I waited six months for an orthopedic surgeon after referral by my GP, who assessed and confirmed that I required a right knee replacement,

My next surprise was being informed that the earliest schedule for a knee replacement would be a minimum of 730 to 912 days (two to 2 1/2 years).

The wait time for surgery starts only the day after the medical assessment. Prince George orthopedic surgeons have confirmed the wait times.

With the existing surgery wait time, my health is put into jeopardy.

In my personnel opinion, it is ludicrous that the Ministry of Health claims 180 days surgery wait times when in actuality they are four to five times longer.

There is a distinct possibility that after two and a half years my medical condition could deteriorate to the point of denial of surgery due to poor medical health.

At present, Prince George orthopedic patients are being medically penalized by incorrect Ministry of Health wait times, which directly effects our health and welfare.
