Trudeau, local MPs voted against modernizing animal cruelty laws

I was not proud to be a Canadian on Oct. 5 when the government killed Bill C-246, The Modernizing Animal Protections Act, which would have brought our animal cruelty law into the 21st century. The bill was struck down at second reading which meant that the object of the bill, i.e., to stop animal cruelty, was not supported.

Trudeau and most of his MPs turned their backs on their MP colleague, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, and chose to ignore archaic animal cruelty laws in this country. Prince George MPs also turned a blind eye to the plight of animals.

Sadly, fear mongering and lies from opponents of the bill were most likely the culprits. Puppy mills, dog fighting rings, bestiality and other forms of horrific cruelty will continue as a result, and allow animal abusers to get away with heinous crimes.

I would like to give sincere thanks to the intelligent and compassionate 84 MPs who recognized that this bill would target animal abuse and not affect legitimate animal use practices. I had expected that our new prime minister would have been one of Bill C-246's loudest cheerleaders. Shame on him and the rest of the "no" voters for not being a voice for the voiceless.
