I have seen and heard a lot of misinformation about the tipping fees impact on the utility fees. It is important to realize that just over 40 per cent of the material landfilled is residential garbage. The rest is commercial / industrial. There seems to be no attempt to recycle things like broken concrete, asphalt shingles, stumps full of rocks, old asphalt you name it.
The last study done by the Regional District indicated that the average household in the city of Prince George produces 28k g of garbage a week. Surely with recycling we are down to 25. In one year a average PG household will produce 1300 kg of Garbage. At $72 per tonne tipping fee a household would pay $93.60 per year or $7.80 per month. If the tipping fee was to rise $5.00 per tonne it should only increase my utility bill 50 cents. My utility bill is $83 per month .
The tipping fee is the least of my worries.
