Doucette Realty real estate agent, Helen Leckie is a busy lady but never too busy to look after her mom. Helen has been in the real estate business for the past 16 years and is well known in the Prince George area.
Helen's mom, Beth (Garnett) Crewson was born in 1924 in Shellmouth, Manitoba. She taught school for a couple of years, married and raised two children, daughter Helen Leckie and son Murray (deceased). After 44 years of marriage her husband George passed away. Soon after Beth had the opportunity to work as a caregiver in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas. After nearly three years in the Bahamas, she moved back to Portage la Prairie, Manitoba. Time went by and Beth moved to Prince George at the age of 74.
Helen said, "My Mom is now 90 years old, she is my roommate, my best friend, my Mom! She has joined several senior centres here in Prince George and has made many friends. She goes for lunch and plays cribbage with good friends Beth Coates and Laurel McKirdy. Mom can barely see any more so her friends do all the scoring when they play crib."
Beth used to have many pen pals but these days they are all phone pals instead. Helen says, "Mom burns up the phone lines on our unlimited long distance calling plan and regularly stays in touch by phone with close to 50 people all across Canada. She is always so considerate of other people's feelings and makes a point of staying in touch with her friends."
Helen explains, "My mom now uses a walker but that does not stop her from getting out on a regular basis. The Prince George and District Senior Citizens Activity Center is her favorite place to go. I take her there twice a week so she can spend time with her friends. She loves the place and we both agree that it is a great place with good food and wonderful people."
