Prince George apologizes for bicyclist's close call. We are sorry this happened.
Let's just think about this for a moment. We can all apologize and feel sincere regret that these things happen.
Does the rider have any responsibility for her actions? Absolutely. She knows this every time she or he goes onto a road where weather conditions do not allow safe driving for bicycles. I expect she may be the type to enjoy back country skiing, skydiving, rock climbing and skating on thin ice.
All these attributes are wonderful but when you include, in your daredevil adventures, the drivers, people, of winter clad cities; you are bringing up a whole new position. You are taking your life in your own hands if you choose to ride a bike in winter conditions.
Prince George has developed a wonderful road allowance for bicyclists but let's be reasonable here. The usage is at the responsibility of the rider and if they choose to do so in the wrong conditions I can't for the life of me see how the rider can give any fault to drivers. Drivers have an extra risk driving in winter conditions also. The stress in these conditions are ongoing problems we in the north deal with every day.
Simply, do not put yourself in danger. This is a reasonable request from your comrades
here in the north. We would like you to be around for a long time. I for one would have
came to your rescue having seen someone in your situation. Perhaps the driver didn't know
you fell and others who past you saw you were up and moving, sensing you were not injured.
There are a multitude of reasons why someone didn't stop.
I don't know where this the person moved from but if it were Vancouver perhaps cycling
during the entire year is a more realistic endeavor.
