It's OK for your editor to wax loud from a "bully pulpit" about abolishing English names from public places.
Make people feel good? No, it does not. It pits one group of Canadians against another.
Canada is fairly calm racially. Let sleeping dogs lie. You are excited about the reaction from extreme opinion online. But you shouldn't kill a mouse with a shotgun. However, if you really believe what you propose about historical names, call your newspaper "The Pocahontas Times."
