We visit my relatives here in P.G. every summer. My two boys are always actively biking, rollerblading and doing other sports activities during our stay here. Being a firm believer in wearing helmets I try to instill this belief and self-responsibility in my children.
My son, who is 12, recognizes the importance, but of course he is pulled to do what the average teenager does and that is to not want to wear a helmet when riding.
So, this morning brought a reward for his faithfulness in wearing his head gear. While riding with a friend at the skateboard park a police officer pulled up and honoured him with a gift certificate to McDonald's and one to the Y.
My son's friend was not wearing a helmet, but was given a certificate because he was a friend to someone who was doing the right thing. I hope this was a lesson and learning experience for my son's friend as well.
Thank you to all those officers who recognize those children who want to do the safe thing and wear protective head gear. We as parents appreciate the assistance they show in helping us raise our children.
