This letter is in response to the article in Feb. 27 P.G. Citizen titled "School Board Sold on two week spring break." I am a mom of two children ages 10 and five. They both go to after-school care because I work full time Monday through Friday. I pay $563 per month for this care. It is a choice to a point. When Christmas holidays come we deal with the two weeks off and make it happen. We are used to this routine. My big issue is the fact that the school board has decided that two weeks at spring break is necessary. By doing this my cost for the month of March for child care is now $1,283, no joke. That is a full month of after school care (even though they are not there for two weeks) and two weeks of full time child care @ $180 per child per week. They stated that "...there is concern with the two weeks about the additional costs of child care...," ya think? They also stated that "...there has been overwhelming support for the two-week spring break..." From whom? I sure didn't vote on this nor did I know that we could give our opinion. Who are you talking too? Stay at home moms (no offence to this choice)? Parents that don't have kids in child care? School board members that have no clue to the real cost of child care, oh but wait, they have it off with their kids so who cares. I also do not see any extra days added to the school calendar to make up for this. I can go on and on about some subjects like first day of school is a pro-D day (the first week is a joke), report card writing days, etc. But for now who at the school board can I send my child-care bill to for the two weeks of child care for spring break?
