Has Canada returned to its roots by electing Justin Trudeau, a former teacher? Perhaps. At one time Canada routinely elected teachers as political leaders. Why? Because teachers are not only intelligent, they also have the ability to communicate ideas and concepts in a manner that other people easily understand, and retain. It is a gift they have chosen to share with others to help them grow, and it is a choice that says a whole lot about who and what a person is.
So, how many prime ministers were former teachers? The first was Robert L. Borden, who was elected eighth prime minister of Canada. Arthur Meighen, the ninth prime minister, was the second. Richard B. Bennett, the 11th prime minister was the third, Louis St. Laurent, the 12th prime minister was fourth, and Lester B. Pearson, the 14th prime minister was fifth. His retirement in the year 1968 marked the last time Canada elected a teacher, one of those marvelous nurturers, guides and exemplary role models for a leader - until Justin, who has become the sixth.
So, what sets teachers apart from lawyers, journalists, accountants and business people? Well, teachers are taught, and choose to make their living giving to others. Lawyers, journalists, accountants and business people are taught, and choose to make their living taking from others. It is the teacher's very nature, their destiny, and their desire to teach, to share and nurture the growth of others.
They listen, validate, inspire individual excellence, and instill cooperation and teamwork. They help mould minds, and how well they do, helps mould our nation. I sure as heck could never control a group of kids like they do, and still have fun, because teaching a class full of young ones is like trying to hold a tub full of corks under water.
I applaud the entire nation of Canada for its recent choice of leader, for it has been 47 years since there was someone at the helm who not only knows people, but sincerely loves them too. Has Canada returned to its roots by electing Justin Trudeau? I think so. And, if he carries on as he did as a teacher, this nation has some very, very good things in store for its future.
