I am a senior citizen who was okay with the city's supposed increase of 3.21 per cent. That was until I opened my 2016 city tax bill. I get the basic grant like most people and I am able to take the additional grant due to my age.
This year, my out-of-pocket tax bill is 30.48 per cent higher than it was last year. This equates to $453 more to pay this year.
I phoned city hall to express my concern and was told that my appraised evaluation went up.
I have done nothing to increase the value of my house. I am sure not many people received 30 per cent or more increase in income in the past year.
I sure didn't, being on a fixed income. If this is the new trend, the city will force me out of my home in the not-too-distant future.
I would like to know if this can be changed.
In the past, when appraisals rose, rates were reduced to compensate, I know as I have been in my present house for over 30 years and have had a steady, but acceptable, tax increase. But 30 per cent is quite ridiculous.
