Tacheeda Mountain Lookout

The weeks hike to Tacheeda Mountain climbs up to one of the many discontinued fire lookouts in our region.

The weeks hike to Tacheeda Mountain climbs up to one of the many discontinued fire lookouts in our region. These fire lookouts used to be an essential part of the fire fighting detection system in our province but over the last decade they have been decommissioned as technology has taken over this task. One of the legacies of these lookouts is the trail system and structures that remain. The Tacheeda Mountain Lookout provides great views as it towers over the surrounding landscape. The lookout is still in great shape and looks like it still gets utilized occasionally as the helipad has been recently painted.

Directions

From the corner of Chief Lake Road and Highway 97 in Prince George, drive 77 km north and turn right onto the 2000 Road. Follow this forest road for 18.2 km to the trailhead. The road passes by Fishhook Lake and continues through a narrow canyon section before winding around Tacheeda Lake.

The trailhead is located 500 m past the first forest service campground on Tacheeda Lake. There is no parking lot, so vehicles must park on the shoulder of the road. The trailhead is difficult to find and can be missed quite easily. There are a few pieces of ribbon and a small trail sign with three orange markers on a tree, marking the start of the trail.

Trail Description

The trail heads to the east before quickly descending to a swampy area between two lakes. Logs and stumps must be used to cross this wet area. Immediately after the swamp, there is a section of blowdown with trees criss-crossed along the trail. It is difficult to follow the trail for 50 m while navigating through the trees. The trail then ascends towards the south and comes across another section of blowdown. This section of downed trees is about 100 m long. From this point on, the trail is well marked and easy to follow. After 4.0 km of climbing steadily, the boundary of the Tacheeda Mountain Eco-reserve is crossed. It is a further 700 m to a rocky knoll which has the fire lookout situated on top. The peak also has two helipads and a radio transmitter nearby. The fire lookout has a set of steep stairs leading to the observation platform. The lookout is well stocked with lanterns, a wood stove, appliances, and a bed etc.
