Students visit Paris, prep for Quiz Me show and put on a play

At cole College Heights, ``nous aimons Paris``! This was definitely true this past week as we celebrated Paris Day. Paris was the most recent destination chosen to visit via the school-wide airmiles program.

At cole College Heights, ``nous aimons Paris``! This was definitely true this past week as we celebrated Paris Day. Paris was the most recent destination chosen to visit via the school-wide airmiles program. Thanks to the special events leadership team, a variety of special activities were planned for the day. The ``Muse d`cole college heights`` was set up to showcase special artwork and structures students created featuring the famous landmarks of Paris including the Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe. Everything from pizza boxes, lego, and marshmallows were used for the structures while many interesting techniques were used in the pictures that were created. For some artists, it was a real family affair as most of the items for the museum were made at home.

Because Paris is well known as a leader in the fashion world, a fashion show was held at lunch time featuring leadership student models as well as two special guest models, Mme Trepanier and Mme Valentine, much to the delight of the many students in attendance for the show. Paris cuisine was also experienced as each class enjoyed a snack of freshly baked croissants and grapes. As well, a special bake sale with a "petit four" theme took place with all proceeds being shared by the school`s leadership program and the SPCA.

The day was truly ``fantastique``!

It was great to see so many students dressed in blue, white, and/or red, the colours of the flag of France and/or berets and other items reflecting Paris culture. A huge "merci" to Save-On Foods for their support as well as to all staff and students for helping to create wonderful memories by showing great school spirit.

The annual French Immersion Kindergarten information night was held recently. This was an opportunity for parents to learn more about the French Immersion program at our school and to meet the French Immersion teachers. Grade 5 student, Allison J. was also on hand to offer her perspective as a student in the program and answer questions.

Finally, Talking Feathers and Circles were introduced to some of our youngest learners this past under the guidance of Mrs. Briscoe, our Aboriginal Education worker.

To foster an appreciation of books and a love of reading, Mrs. Weisgarber, our teacher-librarian is once again sponsoring a reading challenge. From January 21st to February 17th, students at Ecole Heather Park Elementary are encouraged to read at home for at least 20 minutes a day. Parents then sign their child's record sheet, which is returned to the library each week to be entered into the weekly draws for the great prizes to be won. Recently, Mr. Edge, Gr. 6/7 teacher also began the yearly search for the school team(s) that will represent us in the extremely popular but challenging Quiz Me competition that is held throughout the school district. As there are always more students interested than 'spots available' there are noon-day practices to 'ferret out' students' general knowledge strengths, hone their abilities to think quickly on their feet and to gauge how they respond under pressure.

Go team(s), go!!!

Welcome to Dinner Theatre 2013 at Foothill elementary. The play you are about to experience is titled, Imagine. All the music, dance, dialogue, acting and even the dessert have been developed by Grade 4 and 5 students.

Our class believes it is important to honour the people we love - our friends and families. So tonight we wish to give back to you our service, through entertainment and effort we wish to show our affection for you!

To help you to better understand the story we want you to imagine you are a part of a family. This family has five children, a mom and a dad. The children in this family have quite different personalities. They face personal challenges as they try to discover who they are. Holden, the oldest, is a sad child. He needs to learn that he needs others to feel fulfilled. Chloe has dreams of becoming a dancer, but she is scared to take chances. Keara, is a dreamer. She has great ideas, but lacks confidence in her abilities. She needs to believe in herself so she can realize her ambitions. Winnie is only five years old. She doesn't like rules. She doesn't like being told what to do. She thinks the world revolves around her, but she does have a great love for her brother and sisters. The biggest problem, however, involves Isabelle. She is addicted to playing X-Box. She doesn't seem to care about her family and treats them poorly. Her only interest seems to be playing games.

Feel the fear and excitement as the children become trapped in a labyrinth of X-Box worlds. Watch as they learn to work together to solve the mysteries of the X-box. Imagine you are there!
