Students skate, play snow soccer and go to a concert

Around Our Schools

Skating, history, snow soccer, virtues, learning, and goodbye are words to describe the week at cole College Heights Elementary. The CN Centre welcomed our Kindergarten students for a session of skating which brought smiles to many faces.

Our French Immersion students experienced a history lesson with a twist when they recently attended the VAZZY Cultural Performance alongside students from Franco Nord. Using a combination of song, dance, and the French language, the origins of New France were brought to life during this interactive performance.

Snow soccer was the recent activity organized by our school`s Healthy School Ambassadors. Games were organized for Grade 6 and 7 students. The fresh snow made conditions enjoyable. A school-wide Social Responsibility Assembly was held this past week to celebrate and wrap up our most recent virtue of focus, tolerance. Here our "Tolerance Stars", students who exemplify this very important character trait were recognized. Congratulations to all recipients. Our new virtue of focus is fairness.

Our teachers became the learners during the recent Professional Development Day. Teachers spent their time learning more about a variety of topics including whole brain learning, reading literacy, visual math, peer relationships, student self-regulation, and social emotional learning. Finally, it is with mixed emotions that we say goodbye to Mrs. Seabrook who is retiring after 32 years of teaching Kindergarten in our District, 7 1/2 of those years being at cole College Heights. Although we are happy and excited for Mrs. Seabrook, she will be greatly missed. We wish her all the best.

All six French Immersion classes at Ecole Heather Park Elementary headed down to Westwood Church last Monday to enjoy the tunes of French Canadian musical duo, "Vazzy." This team was in town as part of the 28th "Franco Fun" winter festivities and Prince George's annual Cold Snap festival. During the Thursday lunch break, team spirit ran high as members of the Heather Park staff took on the Grade 7 basketball team in a friendly match. It was a narrow victory for staff members; the grade 7s gave them a true "run for their money" on the court. This week Mr. Laupitz, Mr. Marchlewitz, and Mr. Pineault will be escorting their Grades 4 - 7 students on a two-day Tabor Mountain ski trip adventure. Students will have the opportunity to improve their snowboarding and skiing skills through formal lessons followed by some fun free time on the slopes. And as always, students in the Red Cedar Club, who meet each Friday at lunch in the library, are busy reading the nominated books and testing each other with practice questions in preparation for the district Battle of the Books on Thursday, April 11th at Quinson Elementary.

At Hart Highlands Elementary, we have super parent volunteers. Thanks to all those who came out last Friday and served our students pizza lunch. It was delicious. We really appreciate all volunteer efforts. Your time and energy make this a great school. The next one is Chinese Food on Feb. 8th to celebrate Chinese New Year (Year of the Snake-Feb.10) . Our used book sale will be held 12:15 on Friday.
