Students see the world through new eye

Around Our Schools

In the week before the start of spring break, staff and students at cole Heather Park elementary participated in a variety of different activities. On March 7, Mme. Dougherty's K/1 class, itinerant teacher and mobility specialist for the visually impaired, Ms. Rustige and parent volunteers, spent the afternoon learning about eye patches, vision difficulties and how it might feel to move with a limited field of vision.

Students decorated and wore an eye patch while doing daily activities such as stairs, drawing, printing, moving around a room and playing. On Tuesday, March 12, under the direction of Mme. Shaw, our young and enthusiastic choir sang their hearts out at an evening performance at Vanier Hall. Their first selection, Everybody Needs a Friend helped remind of the importance of friendship, while the second, Open the Window, had everyone tapping their toes and looking forward to warmer spring days ahead.

Wednesday, March 13 will be a mixture of academics and athletics. Both our boys' and girls' basketball teams are looking forward to participating in the district-wide elementary basketball tournament held at the P.G. Civic Centre. At the end of the school day there will be a flurry of anticipation as Term 2 report cards go home. Everyone will be hoping for the luck of the Irish on Friday, March 15 when the winner of the PAC hockey raffle fundraiser will be drawn.

Last but definitely not least, we would like to acknowledge the mentorship of three experienced teachers: Mrs. Harms, Mrs. Radway and Mrs. McLachlan who have been sponsoring student teachers: Ms. Eagles, Ms. Riediger, and Ms. Vanviegen, respectively. Everyone's hard work and enthusiasm is appreciated. Both Ms. Riediger and Ms. Vanviegen are completing their final big practicum. We wish everyone the best of luck as they continue in their teaching career.
