Students celebrated Valentine's Day

Around Our Schools

It was a heartfelt week at cole College Heights Elementary this past week with Valentine's Day being a highlight. The school was definitely seeing red that day, and pink, and white as students got into the spirit by showcasing these colours in their wears for the day. In total 870 pieces of red, white or pink were worn by staff and students. Our youngest students got their hearts pumping this week. Kindergarten students were hosted in the gym for a lunch time of jumping and skipping. These little legs sure can jump and jump and jump. The "Love the Library Month" campaign kicked off on Valentine's Day. Over the next month students are encouraged to read as many books as they can to show their love of reading. As well the " Random Act of Kindness Challenge" has begun with students being encouraged to find opportunities to perform random acts that will help or make someone's day when they may least expect it. This challenge runs until the end of month. February 14th was special for another reason. It was 100s day for our primary classes as it was their hundredth day at school. There were many fun activities to celebrate this milestone including necklace making, with 100 fruit loops, counting to 100 to the office staff, special writing activities, and fun ``oldie`` costumes. Lastly, two lucky classes were chosen to attend the District sponsored cultural performance, Delhi 2 Dublin at Vanier Hall. What a treat that was, and our 6/7 mixed hockey team enjoyed their recent playday at the Roll - A - Dome.

February 11-17th was Celebrate Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) week and students in Mrs. Waterman's grade 6 class at cole Heather Park Elementary school definitely demonstrated their willingness to help others. On Valentine's Day they held a cupcake sale and raised close to $500.00 to support a former student of both HPMS and KRSS named Cale S. On his way home from work in December, Cale was involved in a terrible accident, where he fractured his neck. He is currently in Vancouver in GF Strong working on his rehabilitation. Mrs. Waterman's class is also selling wrist bands for $3.00. All donations are welcome. On Valentine's Day, not only were there the usual sea of cards and special treats, but our hallways were also swamped by countless pint-sized 'seniors' as many of our primary classes (and some intermediate classes, too) celebrated the 100th day of school by dressing up as centenarians. What wonderful imagination! Other activities in the 'lead up' to 100th day included a variety of projects collecting one hundred of something: from pennies to raisins! On February 15th, there was a special promotional assembly to 'kick off' PAC's annual hockey raffle. Tickets are $2 each and the lucky winner will receive 4 tickets to see the Vancouver Canucks vs Detroit Red Wings on April 20th, airfare for 4 people (Prince George to Vancouver return) and 2 nights' accommodation in Vancouver. Good luck to all ! Last but definitely not least, our Grade 7 students and their teachers have started the transition journey to high school. KRSS has already hosted its yearly Parent Night, provided an Information evening on the Northern Learning Centre (NLC) and asked for grade 7 students from all their family schools to complete a course survey. Next week counsellors and administrators from KRSS will make individual presentations in each Gr. 7 classroom--showing different aspects of high school life, explaining the semester system and highlighting changes from the elementary school setting such as having an open campus and moving to different classes with different teachers.

The students of Highglen Montessori with the help of their teachers are organizing the material for their student led conferences. Material in each subject is organized to be shared with their parents and/or guardians. Each student has done a self-assessment to share how they feel they have been performing. The conference lasts about 20-30 minutes with their teacher and parent to review what work has been done and what the goals are for the coming semester.
